Pancreatic cancer is a part of a group of cancers called periampullary cancers. These Cancers include malignant tumors which can be formed around the ampulla of Vater which is an opening on the inner aspect of the second part of duodenum. This is the part where the common bile duct and the pancreatic duct come together and open into the duodenum. Periampullary cancers can arise from different locations around the ampulla of Vater, but they have common symptomatology and treatment and hence are grouped together.
Pancreatic cancers or periampullary cancers can be insidious in onset with symptoms like weight loss, backache, vomiting, or jaundice. More often than not, no etiology is found to contribute to causing pancreatic cancer or periampullary cancers.

For obtaining histology or cytology from the pancreatic mass, Endoscopic Ultra-sound guided technique is used. CT scan or PET CT scan will also be required to determine the local, regional, and distant spread of the disease. CA 19-9 is a tumor marker found in the blood which is elevated in most diseases of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic system and it is often found to go to higher values in blood in pancreatic cancers and periampullary cancers.
